Long popular with travellers from the Asian region, as well as business people, the Japanese capital is now growing its reputation as an excellent city destination for holidaymakers from all around the world. We explored ten of the biggest reasons why Tokyo is such a great city, which will also help you to build up a plan of what you want to see and do should you decide to travel there yourself.

1. Shibuya
This ward is ‘Fashion Central’ in Tokyo, but is perhaps most famous for its crossing, which stops traffic in four directions so pedestrians can fill the intersection as they cross, almost like a Times Square of the Far East.

2. Meiji Shrine
Also found in Shibuya, this shrine is now a popular wedding venue as well as a tourist attraction in the middle of a beautiful wooded area, which is well worth exploring in its own right.

3. Yoyogi Park
A great place for taking a relaxing stroll, having a lunchtime picnic and glass of wine, or allowing your children to run off some steam, Yoyogi Park is one of the best-loved places in the city for its residents.

4. Zojoji Temple
The most notable aspect of Zojoji is how calm and peaceful it feels, despite there being a busy road filled with traffic around the clock just outside. Although most of today’s temple is a reconstruction, there are still glimpses of what made this such an important building back in the 14th century, when it was first built.
5. Cat Café

These are situated throughout Tokyo, and are definitely one of the more unique things to be found in the city. Have a cup of tea or a snack while surrounded by beautiful cats – what more could you want from life?!

6. Tokyo Sky Tree

The world’s second tallest building is the Sky Tree, with a great observation deck and a restaurant giving panoramic views of the whole of Tokyo down below.

7. Senso-ji Temple

Whether you visit here for the temple or the network of shopping streets that surround it, there is something for everyone and an experience that you will never forget. A great place where tradition meets modern thinking in a perfect marriage.

8. Manga Shops

In most places around the world, manga is simply an unusual book genre that might take up a shelf or two in your nearest store. In Japan, however, they have whole stores dedicated to it, and if you don’t buy such a book during your trip, you haven’t lived!

9. Tsukiji Fish Market

Fish is a huge part of the Japanese diet, and Tsukiji is the world’s largest fish market, perfect for picking up something great to eat or just killing some time.

10. Sumo

Our final option is another ‘must do’. How could you possibly visit Japan without attending a sumo contest? Enjoy the tradition and majesty of sumo, and if you can attend one of the ‘Grand Tournaments,’ your experience will be even better.
