In 1954, Shinzo Abe, the current Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Liberal Democrat Party, is born in Nagato in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

In 1954, Kokichi Mikimoto, the first entrepreneur to create a cultured pearl, dies at 96, leaving behind the luxury pearl company Mikimoto.

In 1971, John Lennon and his Japanese wife Yoko Ono are the only guest on Dick Cavett’s TV show.

In 2011, Jun Henmi, a writer and poet mostly known for her works of fiction and non-fiction about World War II, dies at 72.
