‘The Doorway’ by Eliza Ekstein

The Doorway by Eliza Ekstein is a powerful short story about the love and hate children are capable of. We meet the two young siblings Charlotte, the sister, and Oliver, the brother, but the parents are totally missing in the entire story. The relationship between the two siblings is strained: “She lived here, tortured by the malicious smiling brother whose jealousy extended to more than just dolls.” The absent mother, craved after by both siblings, is the cause of the brother’s strong feelings.

I won’t divulge the end of the short story as it is quite shocking. Read the entire story here.

The Doorway by Eliza Ekstein was the October 2009 highly commended story of the Global Short Story Competition.

Eliza Ekstein is a Pool-in-Wharfedale-based writer.
