Beijing is more than just a major Chinese city, it’s a cultural melting pot. It’s a place that is brimming with different sights, sounds and tastes, all of which ensure that there are tons of things to keep visitors interested for days and then some. One of the many spectacles that is a must-see, if you happen to be visiting or plan to visit Beijing, is the Legend of Kung Fu show, which is performed daily at the attractive Red Theatre venue.
Having been around since July, 2004, the show is accepted as a major cultural showpiece of China’s history. It incorporates traditional Chinese martial arts, dancing and acrobatics, with a touch of drama. Whether you’re into Kung Fu or not, the show is bound to leave you in awe, not just because of the many gravity-defying stunts, but also because of the story that plays out in each performance. The tale is one of enlightenment and great achievement, centered around a young boy, who dreams of one day becoming a Kung Fu Master. Each performance outlines, in stunning theatrics, his journey of becoming a monk and overcoming doubts and fears, before achieving his goal.
Although there is no speech from the actors, English subtitles above the stage will help you to keep track of the storyline. Additionally, the actors include some of China’s best martial artists, who are well-drilled in their roles. This is evident in their excellent choreography, executed with perfection night after night. The show itself is directed by some of the top directors in China and the set designers are also world class.
The Red Theatre, which is the official venue for the show, is pleasing to the eyes, both inside and out. As the name suggests, it is red in color and was formerly known as the Chongwen Workers Cultural Palace Coliseum.
If you visit Beijing, watching the Legend of Kung Fu should be right at the top of your list of things to do. It’s an experience to remember and one that is wholesome for the entire family.

The kung fu show is a surprisingly modern production. Having seen a few shows here and there, this is the ‘crème de la crème’ of action theater in China.

A few years ago I’ve also seen a traveling Shaolin show in Bangkok and it was great.
