THAILAND is a Southeast Asian country with a tropical climate. The monsoon seasons brings heavy rains from the Indian Ocean. The rains last from May until October and are vital for rice production. But, once in a while, Thailand also experiences freak storms. These storms have strong winds and bring a huge amount of rainfall.
In urban areas, freak storms can cause havoc! This storm took place in Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city. The storm started suddenly and caught everyone by surprise. It lasted for 20 minutes, but the amount of rainfall was unprecedented.
The freak storm battered rooftops and uprooted trees. Banana trees were especially vulnerable because of their shallow roots. Apart from trees, the storm knocked down parked motorcycles too. Once the wind stopped blowing, the rain fell almost perpendicularly.
The damage done by the rain was widespread. Vehicles and power lines were damaged by fallen trees. Due to Bangkok’s poor water drainage system, many roads remained flooded up to an hour after the rain stopped.
