Derek Rutt is a British artist who has been living in Thailand since 1988. In this interview he talks about his art philosophy, his love for Thailand, and the upcoming painting exhibition Magic of Nature at Midnice Gallery in Bangkok.

What was your first exposure to art?
My first exposure to art was as a young seven-year-old. I was always painting at school and I was interested in any subject that had drawing such as geography, biology, and some history. Other subjects did not interest me.
How did you get involved in the entertainment business?
As a young boy, my mother bought me a very simple magic trick one Christmas and this fascinated me so much that I wanted to know more. I also saw it as a vehicle with which to entertain… so every Christmas and birthday I would ask my mother to take me to a wonderful magic shop in London called Davenports.
From then on I started to entertain family and friends and at school I was always the class comic. When I left school I wanted to go to art college or drama school but my parents insisted that I went into the family business of papermaking and merchants.
I hated the office work, as I liked creating so, in the evenings, I joined a drama company and learnt my acting there.
Did you see your magic shows as a form of art?
Later when I started to do my comedy magic shows… yes, I considered them as a form of art. I think that no matter what you perform, the first priority must be that you are a good actor and, of course, that is all part of the arts.
What brought you to Thailand?
I came on holiday to Thailand in 1987 and went to Phuket; there it was so beautiful… I said to my friend after the first day: “I feel like I have come home. I am going to live here.” No other reason, just that.
When did you become a full time artist?
I became a full time artist about ten years ago when I could no longer perform the magic shows due to an operation on my back. Of course, I started painting seriously when I came to Thailand in 1988 and went to live in Phuket!
Tell us about the concept behind your upcoming painting exhibition Magic of Nature.
The concept behind the show is of course nature. I love the nature as it really is so magical. I feel at peace when I am painting flowers or trees and feel I am there when painting it.
Where were these paintings made?
Most of the paintings have been painted here in Bangkok and some painted in Phuket.
How does this exhibition fit into your vision of art?
My vision of art is that a painting should be like a piece of music and give the viewer an emotion, a feeling. Everyone will get a different feeling from a painting. A painting is to be enjoyed not understood. Some paintings have a message but generally for enjoyment. I dislike it when a critic or person thinks that he knows what the artist was thinking… An artist feels when he or she paints and that feeling will be given to each onlooker in a different way. So, just enjoy the painting!
When someone looks at one of my paintings, I want them to feel that they want to walk there or with a flower painting for the flower to go out to them.
In late 2016 you had the honor of meeting HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. What was the occasion?
Yes, on September 13th, I was presented to HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn because I donated sixty of my original oil paintings to the Thai Red Cross for fund raising. It was a great privilege and honour and a wonderful day I will never forget.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to stay in Thailand forever and carry on painting as I just cannot stop. Last year I painted more than 120 paintings.

คุณเข้าสู่วงการศิลปะครั้งแรกเมื่อไร?
ตอนผมอายุ 7 ขวบ ผมมักจะวาดภาพที่โรงเรียนเกี่ยวกับสิ่งที่ผมสนใจ เช่น การวาดภาพภูมิศาสตร์ ชีววิทยา และประวัติศาสตร์ ส่วนเรื่องอื่นๆ ผมไม่ได้สนใจ
คุณเข้าสู่ธุรกิจบันเทิงได้อย่างไร?
ตอนที่ผมยังเป็นเด็ก แม่ของผมซื้อชุดเล่นกลง่ายๆ ให้ผมในวันคริสต์มาส มันทำให้ผมหลงใหลมากและอยากศึกษาเพิ่มเติม นั่นคือสิ่งที่ทำให้ผมเข้าสู่วงการ หลังจากนั้น ทุกวันคริสต์มาสและวันเกิด ผมจะขอให้แม่พาผมไปที่ร้านขายสินค้ามายากล ชื่อว่า Davenports. ผมเริ่มแสดงกลให้คนในครอบครัวและเพื่อนๆ ดู ที่โรงเรียนผมเหมือนเป็นตัวการ์ตูน
พอผมออกจากโรงเรียนอยากไปศึกษาต่อที่วิทยาลัยศิลปะหรือโรงเรียนการละครแต่ผู้ปกครองของผมยืนยันว่าอยากให้ผมทำธุรกิจผลิตกระดาษและจำหน่ายกระดาษ ซึ่งเป็นธุรกิจครอบครัว ผมไม่ชอบทำงานในออฟฟิศ ตอนเย็นผมจึงเข้าร่วมบริษัทการละครและเรียนการแสดงที่นั่น
คุณคิดว่าการแสดงมายากลของคุณเป็นงานศิลปะประเภทหนึ่งไหม?
ตอนที่ผมโชว์การแสดงมายากลตลกนั้น …มันใช่ ผมคิดว่ามันคือศิลปะ ผมคิดว่าไม่ว่าคุณจะแสดงอะไร อันดับแรกก็คือ ต้องเป็นนักแสดงที่ดี และนั่นก็คือส่วนหนึ่งของศิลปะ
อะไรที่ทำให้คุณตัดสินใจมาอยู่เมืองไทย?
ผมมาเที่ยวประเทศไทยในปี ค.ศ. 1987 และเดินทางไปที่ภูเก็ต ที่นั่นสวยมากๆ ผมพูดกับเพื่อนของผมหลังจากวันแรกที่มาว่า “ผมรู้สึกเหมือนได้กลับบ้าน ผมจะอยู่ที่นี่” ไม่มีเหตุผลอื่นนอกจากนี้ครับ
คุณทำงานเป็นศิลปินเต็มตัวตอนไหน?
ผมกลายมาเป็นศิลปินเต็มตัวเมื่อ 10 ปีที่ผ่านมา ตอนที่ผมไม่ได้แสดงมายากลแล้ว ผมเริ่มวาดรูปอย่างจริงจังตอนที่กลับมาเมืองไทยปี ค.ศ. 1988 และตัดสินอยู่ที่ภูเก็ต
ช่วยเล่าเรื่องแนวความคิดของนิทรรศการ Magic of Nature ครั้งนี้
แนวความคิดของการแสดงนิทรรศการครั้งนี้เกี่ยวกับธรรมชาติครับ ผมรักธรรมชาติ มันเหมือนนักมายากลตัวจริง ผมรู้สึกถึงความสงบตอนที่ผมวาดภาพดอกไม้ หรือต้นไม้ รู้สึกเหมือนได้อยู่ที่นั่นด้วยจริงๆ ในขณะที่วาด
ภาพเหล่านี้ถูกวาดขึ้นที่ไหนมั่ง?
ภาพส่วนใหญ่ผมวาดที่กรุงเทพฯ ครับ ส่วนบางภาพก็วาดที่ภูเก็ต
นิทรรศการครั้งนี้บ่งบอกถึงวิสัยทัศน์ของคุณอย่างไร?
วิสัยทัศน์ด้านศิลปะของผม การวาดภาพมันควรจะเป็นเหมือนดนตรี และการแสดงออกทางอารมณ์และความรู้สึก ทุกๆ คนจะรู้สึกแตกต่างกันออกไปเมื่อดูภาพวาดแต่ละภาพ ภาพวาดนั้นควรจะทำให้เรารู้สึกไปกับมัน ไม่ใช่เข้าใจมัน ภาพบางภาพก็มีข้อความสื่อสาร แต่โดยทั่วไปแล้วมันให้ความบันเทิงกับเรา ผมไม่ชอบตอนนักวิจารณ์หรือผู้คนคิดว่าพวกเขารู้ว่าศิลปินกำลังคิดอะไร ศิลปินรู้สึกอย่างไรตอนที่เขาหรือเธอวาดภาพนั้นๆ แค่สนุกไปกับมันก็พอ
ในปี ค.ศ. 2016 คุณได้เข้าเฝ้าทูลละอองพระบาท สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดา เจ้าฟ้ามหาจักรีสิรินธร รัฐสีมาคุณากรปิยชาติ สยามบรมราชกุมารี เนื่องในโอกาสใด?
ครับ ในวันที่ 13 กันยายน ผม ได้เข้าเฝ้าทูลละอองพระบาท น้อมเกล้าน้อมกระหม่อมถวายภาพวาด สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดา เจ้าฟ้ามหาจักรีสิรินธร รัฐสีมาคุณากรปิยชาติ สยามบรมราชกุมารี จำนวน 63 ภาพ เพื่อสนับสนุนกิจกรรมของสภากาชาดไทย เป็นเกียรติอย่างยิ่งและเป็นวันที่วิเศษที่สุด ที่ผมจะไม่มีวันลืม
แผนในอนาคตของคุณเป็นอย่างไรบ้าง?
ผมมีแผนที่จะอยู่ที่ประเทศไทยตลอดไปและวาดภาพต่อไปเรื่อยๆ ครับ เมื่อปีที่แล้วผมได้วาดไปมากกว่า 120 ภาพ
