Inteview with Kancha Gurung “Gabo”, bohemian designer of Mitra Clothing
Born in the rugged mountains of Manang, Kancha Gurung “Gabo” dreamt big dreams when he left his native land at an early age of 14 in quest for his life long desire of becoming a fashion designer. Gabo started his entrepreneurial journey in Bangkok in early in the year 1998 by starting his own bohemian clothing brand “Mitra Clothing.” In a span of 20 years, Gabo has not only fulfilled his dreams of becoming a fashion designer, but he has also established his bohemian fashion brand “Mitra Clothing” which now has three branches in Bangkok and one in Chiangmai.
What got you interested in bohemian fashion designing?
Since I was very young, I have always been fascinated with the bohemian, free spirited style for women’s clothing. A bohemian style represents the mystical, bold, and yet feminine spirit all women inherently possess. I wanted to make clothing for women who are looking for something edgy, spirited and wild to express their style and inner diva. Bohemian fashion does just that. Vibrant colors with bold designs that make every woman unique.
What is the international appeal to bohemian fashion?
From the fashion runways of Paris to top fashion magazines, bohemian fashion is found everywhere. Famous fashion brands around the world infuse some bohemian elements into their collection, from boho fashion apparels and accessories to home decor boho chic; it’s a look that women around the world want to achieve.
What is bohemian fashion for you?
Bohemian fashion to me is not just about bold prints, whimsical outfits, and gypsy style dressing. It is much more than that. To me it reflects energy, sensation and vibrancy that comes from that search for something which leads to self-discovery. My brand “Mitra Clothing” allows you to unfold inside of yourself with a sense of self-discovery. Bohemian fashion should capture freedom, color, life, boldness, attitude, and free spirit in women.
Who is “Mitra Clothing” for?
Mitra Clothing designs are created for women who love bohemian style. However, it is also for women who want to try vibrant colors with bright prints and who still want to exude elegance in their boho-chic attire. Our designs are for women who want to add a little touch of color and a dash of print that can make an otherwise mundane look instantly stylish. Mitra Clothing is handmade in superior quality fabric. Do you include Nepalese themes and motifs in your designs?
I always carry Nepal in my heart. I’m inspired by my tradition and culture when I’m creating designs for my brand. I try to incorporate some traditional thread work, traditional geometrical designs, and ethnic patterns when I’m designing bohemian maxi dresses, kurti shirts, and embellished blouses and coats. Adding a dimension of my own tradition and culture gives me a lot of satisfaction. Although “Mitra Clothing” designs are modern in style, there is always a touch of ethnic motif.
What inspires you?
I’m an observer of life and the world around me so that’s where I look for inspiration. As a designer, I’m a constant seeker in life. I feel all human beings are constantly seeking for ‘that something’. My designs and motifs are a reflection of that inward awareness. That is my inspiration which is reflected in my designs.
