While wondering on the streets of Taipei, I ran across Tianhou Temple and went inside to have a look. I was pleasantly surprise to see that the temple’s small courtyard also has a nicely decorated pond with koi fish.
Here are 5 things you should know about koi fish:
- Koi fish are ornamental Japanese fish which derive their name from the Japanese word “nishikigoi” which basically means “brocaded carp”.
- Koi fish come in various colours, but the most common ones are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream.
- Although we now have special food for koi fish, they are basically omnivorous fish and can eat different kinds of foods, including peas, lettuce, and watermelon.
- If released in the wild, koi fish will revert, within a few generations, to the original coloration of the common carp (yellowish/brownish).
- Breeding koi fish can be a great lucrative business as they sell well, with prices going as high as $3000 US for just one fish.
