5 facts about daikon, or the white radish

This is the first white radish (daikon) I’ve ever grown in my life. It was part of a science project I did with my students at an international school in Bangkok.

Here are 5 facts about the daikon (the white radish):

1. Daikon is a mild-flavoured radish specific to Asia that can grow to a very large size.

2. Although the name “daikon” derives from the same Japanese word meaning “large root,” the radish was originally cultivated in continental Asia, especially in China.

3. Other names the radish is known by include: white radish, mooli, Oriental radish, Japanese radish, Chinese radish, lo bok, and Korean radish (which is green in colour).

4. Its scientific name is Raphanus sativus or longipinnatus.

5. Daikon is very low in food energy but is contains a good dosage of vitamin C. It can be eaten fresh but it can also be cooked, boiled or pickled.
